Ironman 70.3 Triathlon at Clearwater Beach

Swimmers exiting the water

Now to the bikes

Saturday morning while many of us are still under the covers thinking about getting up and making coffee hundreds of athletes in all age ranges will be embarking on quite a journey. First, they will jump in the Gulf of Mexico’s cool waters for a 1.2 mile swim near Pier 60 in Clearwater Beach. After they have completed that daunting task it’s off to a mere 56 mile bike race taking them from the beach all the way to Trinity in northern Pinellas County and back to the beach. Not tired yet, well finally they cap it off with a short 13.1 mile run over the Clearwater Beach Causeway bridge through parts of town and then back to the beginning of it all near Pier 60.
This is part of a series of events that take place throughout the year all over the world. Last night I met the parents of a contestant and they explained their daughter came from Cina to participate in the Ironman competition.
If you have never witnessed something like this you can watch the swim and the beginning and end of both the bike race and the run on Clearwater Beach next to Pier 60. It is amazing to see all of the different sized and varied aged athletes who participate. You can also watch the bike ride and run along the race course. For more information regarding the routes go to http://www.myclearwater.com/ironman or call (727) 562-4636.
It should be a beautiful day weatherwise so if you get the opportunity treat yourself to a rare chance to see world class athletes in a spectacular background and celebrate our area at the same time.
